Radishes

We have a large hillside garden here, mostly laid out in trees, shrubs and lawns which I try to keep in check, not always successfully. And then at the top of the slope are three raised beds which are the Mister's department, he takes care of the vegetables while I take care of the rest. We have a great crop of tomatoes, the rest of his efforts are somewhat experimental, especially since the vegetable beds don't really receive the desired amount of full sun.

He has been trying to grow radishes. None of them have yet produced enough of a root to make anything worth eating. On the other hand, it turns out that they produce edible pods which you can see in the photo here.

And here they are in a stir fry. Delicious.

Friday

Posted a day late - one last photo on the theme of "messy". I have heard that you shouldn't change anything in a garden for the first year after you move in. Well, we have been here ten months and I have yet to discover any redeeming features in this overgrown corner, so I am planning to dig it all up and use the space for something useful. Since it is sunny, and handy to the kitchen, there will be herbs of some sort, and other edible plants. I am thinking of tomatoes, runner beans, or perhaps some blueberry bushes and other edible plants.

As I Was Going to Strawberry Fair...

When I decide to play catch up with all the chores waiting to be done I always seem to end up with less done than when I do nothing. That's not really true, of course, it's just that when I stop ignoring all the jobs waiting to be done, I'm very aware of what's still not done at the end of the day.

This weekend I decided to get busy with the garden, the laundry, the poem submissions waiting to go out, and some piled up administration for a magazine that I work for (unpaid), among other things.

I did take a little time out to take some photographs in the garden. As we were away all September, which is the first flush of spring growth here, it has rather got away on me.

This is the edge of the lawn I was trying to cut:

I handled the edges by digging them with a spade rather than using the mower. (Oh yes - buttercups and daisies - hence the "Strawberry Fair" reference in the title of the post)

The grape vine will soon need pruning - it produces much more prolifically if properly pruned (a sentence with an abundance of "pr" words)

Poppies growing in the front border - I planted them in about May or June and they have done well, even though the weeds are thick around them.
