Thematic Photographic: Family
Family doesn't always mean humans. Unlike my own family, these pelicans are unlikely to complain at finding their photos on my blog, having no understanding of the word "privacy" . And who knew that baby pelicans were black? Not me, at any rate, until I met these three, who were clearly hanging out with mama pelican and therefore, I assume, her offspring.

I love it.. it reminds me of a family of ducks that lived in a pond behind an apartment we lived in when my kids were small.. They slept on our patio at night, and swam in the water in the day.. I miss that ducky family!!!
Great photo!!
I love this photo and I love your perspective on family. You're absolutely right: Who says "family" must be an exclusively human construct?
Watching mother ducks take care of their young is enough to convince me that they probably define the term more effectively than we ever could.
Great shot, Catherine. I had a silmilar thought and spent ages yesterday trying to get a good shot of a duck family. No good results, though.
Ah such a very delightful family indeed! And they don't eat too much either!
Gosh the chicks are so different from their parent. Its kind of fun looking at baby water birds, I think the craziest I have come across here in the UK are coots and moorhens. the chicks have small round black fluffy bodies yet almost adult proportion legs. A super photo
